OKRs and goal tracking

OKRs fail far more often in the tracking than in the writing. A goal set in a spreadsheet and reviewed quarterly is disconnected from the projects and people that move it, so it goes stale within weeks. What makes goal tracking work is proximity: the objective sitting next to the work it depends on, updating as that work does.

When this is the wrong answer

Your team is under ten people in one room. You already know what everyone is working on, and a quarterly objective ritual will cost more attention than it returns. Write the goals somewhere shared and revisit them; at that size it is enough.

Frequently asked questions

What should OKR software actually do?
Connect an objective to the work that moves it. Software that only stores objectives and asks for a quarterly percentage is a spreadsheet with a login. What changes behaviour is the goal sitting beside the projects, tasks and people it depends on.
Why do OKRs fail?
Most often because they live somewhere nobody works. A goal set in January in a document nobody opens is stale by February - not because the goal was wrong, but because nothing connected it to the work that would have moved it.
Does HR software like BambooHR do OKR tracking?
BambooHR is a human-resources system, and its goal features are built around performance reviews rather than execution. If you want goals revisited twice a year alongside appraisals that fits. If you want goals reflecting the work weekly, it does not.
What is the difference between KPIs, OKRs and goals?
A KPI is a number you watch continuously. An objective with key results is a change you are trying to make in a set period, with measures that prove it happened. Goal is the looser word for either. The distinction matters only if you track both.
