Leaving Google Workspace

Most teams do not leave Google Workspace because of the licence price. They leave because the suite covers five or six of the tools they need and they are paying for the rest separately. The hard part of leaving is never the documents — it is email, which is the anchor everything else is attached to.

When this is the wrong answer

Your business runs on Google Sheets with heavy Apps Script, or on shared Drive folders with years of permission structure behind them. Rebuilding that is a project, not a migration, and no platform makes it painless. Price the rebuild honestly before committing.

Frequently asked questions

Why do companies leave Google Workspace?
Rarely the licence price. Workspace covers five or six of the tools a team needs, so project management, goals, a CRM and video get bought separately. Teams leave when they notice they are paying for a suite and a full stack of tools on top of it.
What is the hardest part of leaving Google Workspace?
Email. Documents export cleanly and tasks are easy to recreate, but mailboxes mean MX changes, years of archived mail, calendar invitations already in circulation, and every service that sends to those addresses. Plan the mail cutover first.
Can you leave Google Workspace and keep Gmail?
You can keep the Gmail interface only by keeping Workspace. What you can keep is the address: a custom-domain mailbox on another provider preserves every address, and clients including Apple Mail and Outlook connect over standard protocols.
What does Google Workspace actually cost per user?
The list price is the floor, not the bill. Once a team adds the tools Workspace does not cover, the effective per-user cost typically lands several times higher than the plan price. Count the whole stack rather than the line item.
